INDIGENOUS ASTRONOMY REVITALIZATION
Soundscape Ecology.
Just as Galileo turned his telescope to the heavens, we are turning our ears to waterways to use new methods to listen to what lies beneath the surface...The study of sound in nature is inherently interdisciplinary and includes considerations of ecology, physics. climate. and human activity. Our approach will merge ideas to support the exploration of underwater habitats and document sounds that have never been heard by human ears The Native Skywatchers Soundscape Workshop took place at the Volcano School of Arts and Sciences in partnership with the Kula 'Amakihi Program. Led by teacher Barbara Sarbin, students captured acoustic recordings, both underwater and terrestrial from multiple field sites. Sites included: Punalu'u Bay for Honu-Green sea turtles, offshore near Kawaihae Harbor-Humpback whales. as well as around the campus of the Volcano School of the Arts & Sciences and Volcanoes National Park .
